My gouache paintings are where I let color, flowers, and pattern have their way with me.

These original botanical paintings are inspired by my love of decorative art and historic design, particularly the Arts and Crafts movement, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and the bold graphic character of vintage illustration and posters. Stylized flowers, repeating forms, symmetry, and rich color give the collection a feeling that can range from romantic and old-world to surprisingly modern.

Roses, ranunculus, sunflowers, and other botanical forms become patterns as much as subjects, making these pieces especially suited to people drawn to floral art, garden-inspired interiors, historic decorative design, colorful maximalist spaces, and unusual original artwork for the home. Several designs are created as complementary pairs, for those who enjoy displaying botanical artwork together.

Each painting is created by hand in gouache, an opaque water-based paint I love for its velvety matte surface, rich color, and ability to move between fine detail and bold graphic shapes. I increasingly make my own gouache from artist pigments as part of the process. I paint on heavyweight Arches watercolor paper and retain its hand-torn edges as part of the finished artwork.
