FIRE+OIL
FIRE+OIL
These Fire+Oil fusions bring together two of my favorite things: the earthy richness of burned wood and scrumptious, expressive color.
Each piece combines an original oil pastel painting with a hand-burned wood surround, created as part of the artwork rather than simply as a conventional frame. The contrast between saturated color, natural wood, and intricate burned pattern gives these pieces their distinctive character.
Botanical forms, woodland imagery, and the decorative influence of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements often find their way into these pieces. The result falls somewhere between painting, woodburned illustration, and decorative art—richly patterned, nature-inspired, and a little unusual. They are especially suited to people drawn to floral and botanical art, moths and woodland imagery, historic design, and one-of-a-kind mixed-media artwork for the home.
Fire+Oil Fusions tend to emerge slowly. Finding the right relationship between the painted image and its woodburned surround can be surprisingly challenging, and I can't really force one into existence. I wait until an idea arrives in which the two mediums seem to belong together and can become a single piece of art.

One-of-a-Kind Originals:
Each Fire+Oil Fusion is a one-of-a-kind original and will not be recreated as an edition. The woodburned surround and oil pastel painting are designed together as a single work of art, and once a piece is sold, that particular work is gone.
All works are created in Swoope, Virginia, USA.
