These Fire+Steel pieces bring together three elemental materials: wood, fire, and steel.

Each piece begins with a birch panel burned entirely by hand using a fine-tipped pyrography pen. The designs are built through repetitive marks, pattern, texture, and the natural grain of the wood, then surrounded by hand-worked steel created as part of the artwork rather than simply as a conventional frame. The contrast between pale birch, deeply burned imagery, and dark steel gives the pieces their distinctive character.

Botanical forms and decorative pattern are at the heart of the collection. Some designs are burned as dark positive forms against the natural wood, while others reverse the process, burning the surrounding space and allowing the pale birch itself to become the image. This play between positive and negative is part of what led me to create the pieces as companions.

Fire+Steel began with designs I had originally created for my gouache paintings and a curiosity about how they might change when translated into woodburning. The steel came later, after I realized the panels needed something more substantial around them. What began as a framing problem became an essential part of the work — a meeting of wood, fire, and steel that feels both earthy and elemental.
