Watership Down

Watership Down is a woodburned illustration of two rabbits on alert among a dense tangle of flowers. Inspired by the wildlife of Virginia and the decorative traditions of Chinese chinoiserie, the composition pairs the rabbits’ simple, geometric silhouettes with an exuberant pattern of blossoms and foliage. Their backward glances suggest that something may be lurking just beyond the safety of their floral hiding place, giving the piece a quiet sense of story and suspense. ⚜️ UNDERSTORY: A hare had been on my list of subjects from the very beginning of my pyrography journey, but I never quite found the right place for one in a design. When I decided to create a collection inspired by the animals that live around us here in Virginia, I changed the hare into rabbits—since we have no true hares—and began imagining a pair of them hidden away in a tangle of flowers.

Again, the critters imagined seemed to tell me how they wanted to be: this time slightly alert, glancing over their shoulders at something that might be lurking nearby. What had they heard? Was there really something out there, or were they simply being sensible rabbits? I liked the idea of that little question remaining unanswered.

The floral pattern was inspired by some Chinese chinoiserie I discovered "lurking nearby" in the form of that indispensable book of historic patterns that has become my standard bedside reading.

The title Watership Down seemed a natural fit for two rabbits with a world of their own and perhaps a little danger just beyond the flowers.

Each woodburn is created using a fine-tipped burning pen. Rather than drawing the subject itself, I burn around it, allowing the negative space of the natural wood to become the lightest part of the image. Repetitive marks, pattern, texture, and the grain of the wood come together to create each piece.

The burn time noted above reflects the burning process itself and does not include the time spent developing the original design or preparing the wood.

Each piece is offered as a limited handmade edition of 10. It is individually drawn and burned by hand—not printed or mechanically reproduced—so no two will be exactly alike. Variations in wood grain, live edge, size, shape, thickness, and handwork are a natural part of the process and give each piece its own character.

Each finished woodburn is numbered as part of its edition. Please allow approximately 4–6 weeks for creation before shipping.
