Virginia Wild - Large

Virginia Wild is a hand-burned celebration of the small, untamed things that grow, flutter, creep, and wander through the Virginia landscape. Inspired by the wildflowers, trees, ferns, fungi, insects, and woodland life surrounding my home in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains, the design unfolds across the tabletop and continues down each of its three legs. Every element is individually drawn and burned by hand, transforming a simple wooden table into a functional piece of art—one meant to be lived with, explored, and discovered a little at a time.

⚜️ UNDERSTORY: I came to pyrography almost by accident. While researching papercut art, I happened across an old Flickr photograph of an art student's thesis project—a chair that had been woodburned from top to bottom.

I was gobsmacked! There was something about taking an ordinary piece of furniture and covering it with burned pattern that completely captured me. I'd never owned a pyrography burner and had no experience with the medium, but I had the strangest certainty that I needed to try it. I just knew.

Perhaps a sensible person would have started with something small but I wanted to burn a table.

So I bought my first burner and set about covering nearly every square inch of one—across the tabletop, around the edge, down the legs, even across the underside. I filled it with the leaves, flowers, ferns, insects, mushrooms, and other little bits of the natural world that I love, letting the imagery accumulate until the table became its own small wild place.

I was so pleased with that first experiment that I made another. And, as it turned out, what began with a chance photograph and one rather ambitious first project became the beginning of my work in pyrography.

Each Virginia Wild table is created using a fine-tipped burning pen. Rather than drawing the botanical forms themselves, I burn around them, allowing the natural wood to become the lightest part of the design. The pattern travels across the tabletop, around its edge, and down each of the three legs, with repetitive marks, texture, and wood grain becoming part of the finished piece.

Made to Order

Each Virginia Wild table is individually drawn and burned by hand. The wildflowers, leaves, ferns, fungi, insects, and other natural forms are arranged anew for each table, so while every piece shares the character of the original design, no two compositions will be exactly alike.

Because each table is created one at a time, please allow approximately 8-10 weeks for creation before shipping.

Payment for Made-to-Order Furniture
A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to begin your Virginia Wild table. The remaining balance is due upon completion and before shipping. Finished photographs will be provided before the final payment is requested.

Because each table is individually drawn and burned by hand, your table will share the character and botanical vocabulary of the original Virginia Wild design but will have its own unique composition.

Shipping & Assembly

For safe transport, Virginia Wild will arrive with its three legs removed. All necessary hardware is included, and assembly is simple.

All artwork prices include complimentary shipping within the contiguous U.S.
