⚜️ UNDERSTORY: I've changed the name of this piece more times than I care to admit, but I keep coming back to Snow White & Rose Red. I think it's because of the contrast between the soft, cultivated rose in the center and the wild roses surrounding it: like a pair of very opposite sisters who love each other dearly. There's something about the tame and the wild existing together that appeals to me—the idea that even the most carefully tended rose has a little wildness at its heart, and that the wildest things can hold something unexpectedly gentle.

Each woodburn is created entirely by hand using a fine-tipped burning pen. Rather than drawing the subject itself, I burn around it, allowing the negative space of the natural wood to become the lightest part of the image. Repetitive marks, pattern, texture, and the grain of the wood come together to create each piece.

In my Fire+Oil pieces, the burn is created on a handmade hardwood frame and then paired with an original oil pastel painting created on a hardboard panel. I apply and blend the oil pastel entirely with my fingers rather than brushes or other tools, building the color in layers to create its soft, atmospheric quality. The finished painting is protected behind museum glass.
