Nevermore is a woodburned illustration of a raven looking out from an ornate arch beneath a full moon. Inspired by the ravens that live near my Virginia home, the piece brings together the natural world and the decorative traditions of historic Persian and Moorish architecture. Intricate botanical patterns, stylized clouds, and bold contrast create the feeling of a tower high above the world—a place where the raven seems to see farther, and perhaps know more, than we do. ⚜️ UNDERSTORY: I started a collection based around animals that live here in Virginia. We have two pairs of neighborhood ravens, and I count myself lucky on days I can watch them fly overhead. There's something about ravens that makes me feel as though they can see farther and deeper than we mere mortal humans. They are truly fascinating beings.

Once I had the raven itself drawn out, I began looking for a world to put him in. While browsing a book of historic patterns, I came across some beautiful Persian, Moorish, and Indian screens, many of them built around ornate arches. I knew immediately that I wanted to try something along those lines.

And then the story began to take shape: a raven high up in a tower somewhere in the sky, looking out over the world on a night of the full moon. Who was he? What could he see from up there? And what did he know that the rest of us didn't?

I never did find out all the answers, but I had to create the place where they might be found.

Each woodburn is created using a fine-tipped burning pen. Rather than drawing the subject itself, I burn around it, allowing the negative space of the natural wood to become the lightest part of the image. Repetitive marks, pattern, texture, and the grain of the wood come together to create each piece.

The burn time noted above reflects the burning process itself and does not include the time spent developing the original design or preparing the wood.

Each piece is offered as a limited handmade edition of 10. It is individually drawn and burned by hand—not printed or mechanically reproduced—so no two will be exactly alike. Variations in wood grain, live edge, size, shape, thickness, and handwork are a natural part of the process and give each piece its own character.

Each finished woodburn is numbered as part of its edition. Please allow approximately 4–6 weeks for creation before shipping.
