⚜️ UNDERSTORY: This design began with an idea for an oil pastel painting, inspired by the Great Master of Pattern himself, William Morris. I’ve always loved the way his designs seem to grow and wander across a surface, with flowers, leaves, and stems finding their way into the most wonderful arrangements.

I spent quite a while working out the design, but when it came time to choose the colors, things began to go sideways. I tried one palette, then another, and then another, but nothing seemed quite right. After many fits and starts, I finally had to admit defeat.

Or perhaps the design had simply been trying to tell me something all along. Once I imagined it as a woodburn, everything fell into place. The warm natural wood became the flowers and vines, the dark burned background gave the pattern its depth, and suddenly I no longer needed to worry about which colors belonged where.

Apparently, Climbing Clematis knew what it wanted to be before I did.

Each woodburn is created using a fine-tipped burning pen. Rather than drawing the subject itself, I burn around it, allowing the negative space of the natural wood to become the lightest part of the image. Repetitive marks, pattern, texture, and the grain of the wood come together to create each piece.

The burn time noted above reflects the burning process itself and does not include the time spent developing the original design or preparing the wood.

Each piece is offered as a limited handmade edition of 10. It is individually drawn and burned by hand—not printed or mechanically reproduced—so no two will be exactly alike. Variations in wood grain, live edge, size, shape, thickness, and handwork are a natural part of the process and give each piece its own character.

Each finished woodburn is numbered as part of its edition. Please allow approximately 4–6 weeks for creation before shipping.
