⚜️ UNDERSTORY: This is one of my earliest woodburns, and at just 15 × 15 inches, it was also an opportunity to try something completely different. I wanted to make a design of roses, but instead of the flowing, intricate botanical patterns I usually gravitate toward, I found myself exploring a much flatter, more geometric approach.

I had recently discovered the Bauhaus movement and was surprised by how much I enjoyed its chunky interpretations of nature. There was something appealing about reducing familiar forms to their simplest shapes and seeing how much of their character remained.

So I began deconstructing my roses. And then I deconstructed them some more. Before I knew it, I had even detached the leaves from the blooms!

The result was a design that felt quite unlike anything else I had made. It was still a rose garden of sorts, but one where the flowers and leaves had become their own little collection of shapes.

I suppose that’s one of the pleasures of experimenting with a new style. You begin with something familiar, take it apart, and discover that you rather like what happens when you put it back together differently.

Each woodburn is created using a fine-tipped burning pen. Rather than drawing the subject itself, I burn around it, allowing the negative space of the natural wood to become the lightest part of the image. Repetitive marks, pattern, texture, and the grain of the wood come together to create each piece.

The burn time noted above reflects the burning process itself and does not include the time spent developing the original design or preparing the wood.

Each piece is offered as a limited handmade edition of 10. It is individually drawn and burned by hand—not printed or mechanically reproduced—so no two will be exactly alike. Variations in wood grain, live edge, size, shape, thickness, and handwork are a natural part of the process and give each piece its own character.

Each finished woodburn is numbered as part of its edition. Please allow approximately 4–6 weeks for creation before shipping.
